One person was seriously injured when a car crashed into a moose on a highway in southern New Hampshire on Wednesday night.

The crash occurred at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday in the westbound lane of Route 101 in Candia, Fire Capt. Michael Kelley said.

He said the moose crossed the eastbound side of Route 101 and was hit but was able to continue to run over to the westbound side. Once in the westbound lanes, another vehicle hit the moose directly and it went through the windshield.

One person was seriously injured in the crash, Kelley said. No update on their condition was immediately available.

The moose was a female, weighing about 800-900 pounds. It did not survive the crash.
