NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry (TDF) is urging Tennesseans to burn safely and responsibly to avoid starting wildfires.

The TDF reports that, starting October 15, residents burning leaves or natural debris must obtain a free burn permit as the state enters its annual wildfire season.

The state says that burn permits help TDF communicate when and where it is safe to burn. Permits will be issued when it is safe to burn.
