VALLEY, Ala. (WRBL) — Valley Police say a woman is facing charges after allegedly attempting to set fire to a wooden cross outside a local church.

According to investigators, officers responded to Rehobeth Baptist Church, located at 204 Hughley Road, on October 6, 2025, after receiving a report of a woman trying to ignite the cross displayed in the church yard.

Valley Police Chief Mike Reynolds tells WRBL that a parishioner witnessed the incident, reporting that the woman — later identified as 55-year-old Christy Lynn Wesson, also known as Christy Lynn Jones — hung a bag of liquid on the cross and attempted to light it. When the parishioner approached her, police say Wesson got into her vehicle and drove away.

Officers obtained a tag number from witnesses and later tracked Wesson down.
