The question of Alberta’s funding of private schools has been raised, with a petition bring brought to attention of Alberta’s chief electoral officer on Tuesday calling for the end of public funding.

The citizen initiative request started by Alicia Taylor states “Should the Government of Alberta end its current practice of allocating public funds to accredited independent schools?”

Alberta currently provides 70 per cent of the funding that it would give to each student in a public school to each student in a private school. Simplified, that would mean that if a public-school student is given $100 in funding, a private-school student would be provided $70 in funding — the highest rate in Canada.
