BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) -- U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) honored the two Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies who were shot Monday while speaking on the Senate floor.

Deputy Charles Riley, a six-year veteran, did not survive his injuries. Captain Brett Stassi Jr., son of Sheriff Brett Stassi, is in critical but stable condition. He has had multiple surgeries, Cassidy said.

“A tragedy like this reminds us that law enforcement officers put their lives on the line for us every single day,” Cassidy said.

Cassidy praised Riley’s bravery and sacrifice, noting that he “gave his life protecting our community.” He also extended prayers for Stassi’s recovery and for the families, colleagues, and the Plaquemine community of both officers.
