CRANFORD, N.J. (PIX11) — Teenagers of Cranford have organized a petition to close "gaps in current legislation" after two girls were killed last month.
Friends Maria Niotis and Isabella Salas, both 17, died as a result of a hit-and-run that left the community "shocked and saddened," the petition reads.
The girls were riding e-bikes when they were hit by a car, officials said. A 17-year-old boy from Garwood was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, prosecutors announced following the incident.
Friends of Niotis told PIX11 News that the 17-year-old suspect had stalked her and wanted to date her. Cranford Police Chief Matthew Nazarro asked the public to support the victims' families but refrain from speculating on the investigation.
