MAURY, N.C. (WBTV) - A former Mecklenburg County school teacher serving more than 20 years for raping a teenager was killed in prison, North Carolina Department of Adult Correction officials said.

Ernest Nichols was reportedly found on Tuesday, Oct. 6, on the floor in a dormitory at Greene Correction Institution, WBTV sister station WITN reported .

Another inmate, Wilbert Baldwin, was charged with murder. Baldwin was convicted of second-degree murder in a 2007 murder in Richmond County.

Nichols was scheduled to be released in September 2027.

A 15-year-old first reported Nichols in 2009, saying she had been raped by him multiple times at his home in Huntersville.
