As the redistricting battle takes center stage, Democratic U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla of California is accusing the Trump administration of manipulating elections in another, subtler way: by purging voter rolls.
"It's a dangerous fishing expedition that's going to lead to chaos and risks denying eligible United States citizens of their fundamental right to vote,” Padilla said during a virtual press conference on Thursday.
The U.S. Department of Justice is attempting to compile the largest set of voter roll data in its history. The Trump administration is suing California, among other states, for its refusal to hand over voter information.
Padilla's bicameral legislation prevents people from being removed from the voter rolls without irrefutable evidence they have died or moved out of state.
