AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) - A plan to increase safety for those who live, work, and visit the busy Highland Square district has been put in place, according to Mayor Shammas Malik.

The new safety measures come just days after 25-year-old Timothy Hutchinson lost his life. Hutchinson was the innocent victim of a shootout between two unknown suspects this past weekend on West Market Street in Highland Square.

Flowers, candles, and pictures lay in the spot where Hutchinson’s friends and strangers tried to save the Wooster man.

On the heels of that senseless shooting, Mayor Malik met with businesses and those who live in the area on Wednesday to discuss what needs to change in order to keep everyone safe.
