WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (WFLA) — The Winter Haven Police Department is reassuring residents that there was no "football field" sinkhole discovered Thursday evening, but rather an underground tunnel that formed in a construction zone.
The police department said that when first responders arrived on scene, initial reports claimed a large sinkhole had opened up near a construction site on Intermodal Drive. The department said in fast-moving situations, responders communicate what they're seeing in real time to ensure a fast, coordinated response.
Upon closer inspection, the "sinkhole" was revealed to be a retention pond that had connected to another pond across the street after excavation work caused water to start moving beneath the road from one to the other. The moving water created a tunnel
