After a federal judge overturned a 2023 New York state law which attempted to wrest nuclear regulatory control from the US government, the decommissioned Indian Point nuclear power plant is set to resume discharging radioactive wastewater into the Hudson River. New York Attorney General Letitia James recently announced her intent to appeal the ruling.
“After how far we have come in remediating both the Hudson and people’s relationship with it, this is the last thing our communities need,” she expressed in a public statement.
If one follows the science, experts at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Environmental Protection Agency say the amount of mildly radioactive tritium-containing wastewater being released is well below safety limits.
