NEW ORLEANS —
Penguins at Audubon Aquarium are putting their painting skills to the test to raise awareness for World African Penguin Day on Oct. 11. The penguins dip their feet in paint and walk on a canvas, creating a unique piece that visitors can take home. The artwork will be sold to raise money to help save the seabirds.
The purpose of World African Penguin Day is to educate the public on the penguins becoming critically endangered. Wendy Zulenski, curator of birds and mammals at the Audubon Aquarium, says climate change and overfishing are major factors of endangerment. Advertisement
According to the aquarium, the African penguin population in the 1900s was 3.2 million. Currently, there are only 55,000 in the world.
