DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) -- Every year from October 5th until the 11th, bookworms and activists pay homage to Banned Books Week.
The national awareness week was launched in 1982 to highlight the importance of free access to information and to unite the book community, including librarians, teachers, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers, in support of freedom and the First Amendment.
Individuals in the national and local book community, like Gina Riley, believe the event is more than just banned books.
"I think that this week we're showing that we don't need to ban books," said Riley, who recently opened her used bookstore in Dothan, Gina's Next Chapter.
