AMES, Iowa —
AFSCME Local 96 rallied at Iowa State University’s Free Speech Zone on Thursday to demand the reinstatement of clerical worker Caitlyn Spencer, calling her firing over social media posts a First Amendment violation as Turning Point USA students countered with arguments about employees’ online responsibility.
Union leaders said they are "standing up for free speech" and urged ISU to reverse the decision.
Members of the student group Turning Point USA, who were present, voiced their own perspectives on speech and responsibility.
"We believe that freedom of speech is a very important right, given to us by the Constitution," said Abigail Wamhoff, an ISU junior and Turning Point USA member.
