Santa Cruz County is well on its way to creating its first Community Wildfire Protection Plan, a longtime ambition that was stalled for years by limited funding and staffing, according to Emergency Management Director Sobeira Castro.

The plan, which picked up steam after the county received a nearly $180,000 grant last year, would help emergency responders in several aspects: identifying high-risk areas, determining which fuel reduction projects to prioritize, improving evacuation routes and other planning. ×
