LOUISVILLE, Ky. — David Yates is the new Jefferson County Clerk, and his appointment means his Senate seat is vacant.

On Friday, Gov. Andy Beshear, D-Ky., signed a “Writ of Election” to fill the vacancy before the start of the 2026 legislative session, which begins Jan. 6, 2026.

A special election will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025, to fill the 37th District seat. The Democratic and Republican parties of Jefferson County will nominate a candidate for the special election.
