NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are investigating a reported assault in Newport that sent one person to the hospital Friday morning.

Officers were called to Carey Street around 11:30 a.m. and found a 21-year-old victim in need of immediate medical attention.

The victim was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where they remain in critical condition.

A 21-year-old Newport man was taken into custody and is being questioned, according to police.

Police said the incident was isolated and there was no threat to the public.
