BOONE, N.C. — Although fall leaves don't peak in Charlotte until early-mid November, now is the perfect time to leaf peep in the mountains!

A cool start to August had some leaves turning early, but the warm September helped us get back to a normal timeline.

That's according to Dr. Howard Neufeld, a professor of biology at Appalachian State University. He went out this week to check on the colors and says the best time to see them in the High Country is now.

He suggests going early in the morning because it's less crowded and the colors are even better!

"They jump out at you early in the morning," Neufeld said. "So, up to about 10:30, you can get really good pictures. After that, the colors are gonna be a little washed out cause the sun is so high in the sky."
