AUSTIN, Texas — Many Austin city leaders are worried after Governor Greg Abbott instructed the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to enforce a statewide crackdown on signs, symbols and pavement markings on the road with political messages.

“I think many would agree this isn't about painting on a street, it's about the message our cities are allowed to send," said Austin City Council Member Zo Qadri, District 9.

In a press release on Wednesday, Gov. Abbott pointed to a guidance issued by the U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy saying any symbols, flags, or other markings conveying social, political or ideological messages on the road are prohibited to promote safety.
