Something showed up in the air in the Washington region on Friday that has not been noticed much here recently. It was that well-remembered autumn chill, and on Friday it asserted itself with temperatures that fell into the 30s in places.
It was almost if not quite breezy on Friday. At altitudes of no higher than a mile, white-edged clouds with gray undersides sped across a blue sky. When they happened to cover the sun, draping sudden shadows over streets and buildings, cold days did seem in store.
