DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Durham Public Schools is increasing students' access to mental health services with the help of more than a million dollars from the county.

"Our students, our babies from four years old up having to go through those same stresses, are experiencing this world at the same time we are," DPS Director of Student Wellness and Advocacy Tomeka Ward-Satterfield said. "But they have less strategies, less capacity to deal with it."

On Friday, Durham Public Schools and Alliance Health launched a revamped mental health program for students. $1.5 million from Durham County will allow the district to guide children and their families to care specifically tailored to their needs, regardless of insurance.
