DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Police are investigating what led to a crash early Saturday morning on N.C. Highway 147, the Durham Freeway, in downtown Durham.

An alert sent by the North Carolina Department of Transportation around 4 a.m. said there was a vehicle crash on NC-147 North at mile marker 3 near Jackie Robinson Drive.

The NCDOT camera showed what appeared to be a large passenger vehicle, similar to an SUV, late Saturday morning around 8:30 a.m. with damage on all sides on the side of the highway. Officers at the crash were seen on the highway lanes investigating the scene.

The Durham Police Department issued an alert via social media to warn the public to avoid the crash scene and take an alternative route around NC-147 North.
