MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - The American Red Cross is best known for the health and shelter support they provide people with during an emergency, but they also have volunteers dedicated to helping others through mental health challenges when that worst day becomes a reality.

On Friday, World Mental Health Day was meant to spread education and awareness about mental health struggles and the support available.

Mark Schmitt has been volunteering with the American Red Cross of Wisconsin disaster mental health team for decades and has traveled across the country helping others.

He says it’s important to advocate for people when they’re struggling with issues, big or small.
