ON THE COMBAHEE RIVER — Eyes can say a lot about an individual. For hunters on the Lowcountry’s dark waters, the distinctive glow of two dots on the surface lets them know an alligator is nearby.
The time to strike is short, with South Carolina’s gator season lasting roughly a month, from the second Saturday in September to the second Saturday of October.
The rivers, creeks and lakes that are home to the cold-blooded reptiles become waters of chase. Hunters are often guided, while the brave guide themselves.
