On Monday, patients at Maharshi Deoraha Baba Medical College in Deoria complained of a foul smell wafting through the premises. Hospital officials traced the source to a water tank on the fifth floor. When they opened the cover to inspect the tank, they were met with a horrific sight — the decomposed body of a man lay inside.

Police have now identified the victim as Ashok Gawande, a 61-year-old man from Thane in Maharashtra. Authorities have also launched an inquiry to determine how the body ended up in the tank.

The incident had created panic in the hospital, leading authorities to halt the water supply temporarily and alert the police. A joint team of the police, fire department, and forensic officials had arrived at the scene to retrieve the body.
