MONROE — The Reptile Zoo in Monroe, home to dozens of exotic scaled creatures like an American albino alligator and two-headed turtle, will live on another day. For now.

The nearly 30-year-old roadside zoo was set to close Oct. 18 after owner Isaac Petersen said the business had weathered one rough year of revenue after another. He was looking to sell the entire business for $385,000, or at least sell dozens of his unique reptiles by Sept. 15.

Ever since Petersen announced the closure of the zoo, visitors have turned out to see the only roadside zoo specializing in reptiles in the state. Ticket sales in September tripled those of July, so he took it as a sign.

Petersen will instead close the doors just for a couple of weeks after Oct. 18 to get some chores in order. Afterward, he said,
