SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - A countywide burn ban is now in effect as dry conditions continue to raise wildfire concerns.
The ban comes in place when the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) meets or exceeds 500. It will remain in place until it falls below 500 for seven consecutive days.
All outdoor burning is prohibited. However, certain exceptions exist, like cooking on barbeque grills or pits that fit within county guidelines.
Sarasota County Fire Department urges residents to not use anything that may create sparks. Experts say you should: clear debris, remove dead vegetation and have a plan and an emergency preparedness kit packed in case of evacuation. They also ask residents to create three zones of defensible space around their home to help protect property for potential wildfires.
