Toronto pop singer Shawn Mendes broke into the mainstream posting song covers on the video platform Vine. While the global rise of TikTok has rewritten the rules of such posting platforms, Mendes has gone on to bigger and better things.

His 2015 release Handwritten debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, making Mendes one of only five musical artists to debut in the top spot before the age of 18.

The single Stitches from the album hit No. 1 in the U.K. and made Top 10 in both Canada and the U.S. Subsequent album releases also hit top chart positions adding to his impressive sales record and he continues to break records for an artist in his age group. The 27 year-old singer headed into a more folky direction on his fifth record, 2024s Shawn, which received strong reviews.
