STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — For 13-year-old Matthew Cona of Great Kills, honoring fallen heroes isn’t just a one-time event — it’s a calling.
As a youth runner with “Running 4 Heroes,” a national nonprofit organization, Matthew continues to honor first responders who have died in the line of duty through one-mile tribute runs that bring together law enforcement, emergency responders and local communities.
Matthew’s most recent run, held this past Thursday at 5:30 p.m. on Staten Island, paid tribute to NYPD Detective Hammad Islam, who died in the line of duty in July. He was joined by members of the NYPD, MTA Running Club, Metropolitan Fire, North Shore Rescue Squad and local residents.
“It was a beautiful night, filled with a strong sense of community and support,” said Matthew’s mother, Jaim
