CHEK News has learned the federal government has quietly given millions of dollars to the City of Victoria.

The more than $2 million, according to Health Canada, is a grant sourced from the Emergency Treatment Fund, initiated “to help support municipalities and Indigenous communities address urgent needs relating to the toxic illegal drug supply and overdose crisis.”

City spokesperson Colleen Mycroft told CHEK News the city applied for funding on behalf of the non-profit SOLID Society for Dowler Place, a post-detox recovery center.

Without consultation, the city announced in June 2024 that it would be investing up to $1.8 millions of taxpayers money into the facility. The city’s funding for Dowler Place ended in July.
