HomewardBound of the Grand Valley, which operates the area’s only two unhoused shelters, announced Friday that it cannot afford to continue weekend operations for its emergency shelter.
The semi-closure of its shelter at 2853 North Ave. took effect immediately, leaving approximately 150 unhoused locals without refuge for the weekend.
The indefinite reduction is the latest loss in local services for the unhoused population, which a City of Grand Junction report from last month said has grown by 100% since 2019.
“We have nowhere to go,” shelter guest Crystal Frost said. “Nowhere.”
According to HomewardBound Board Chair Doug Clayton, the decision “was the only option we had,” after discovering that several expected state grants would not be accessible.
