FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina — Three high school football players from E.E. Smith High School were killed in a single-car crash Wednesday night in Fayetteville, WRAL News reported .

According to the Fayetteville Observer , the crash happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Rosehill Road when a gray 2024 Honda Civic veered off the road, struck a utility pole and crashed into a tree. The impact claimed the lives of 18-year-old Jai’Hyon Lamont Elliott and Trevor Merritt and Nicholas Williams, both 17. All three were members of the school’s varsity football team.

The driver, identified as 21-year-old Dymond Monroe, was airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill and remains in critical condition. Monroe is an Army veteran and mother of a young child, WRAL said.
