A father has told 7NEWS of the terrifying moment he ran towards danger, kicking down the door of a burning mansion after hearing cries for help.

The multi-million-dollar home in Henley Beach, South Australia , was already engulfed in flames when passerby Trent Steley sprang into action.

Police arrived within minutes, charging into the inferno. Steley was right behind them.

“There was a lady waving me down, saying someone was inside,” Steley said.

“I could hear someone calling out for help.”

With thick smoke pouring from the home, Steley and an officer tried everything to break through the front door.

“We kicked it over and over. Ended up using a concrete slab from an umbrella stand,” he said.
