RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) -- A Raleigh man died after he was found unresponsive in his jail cell in the Wake County Detention Center on Saturday morning, officials said.

The 33-year-old man, arrested in early March, was discovered in his cell around 7:20 a.m., according to a Wake County Sheriff's Office news release.

"Detention officers and medical staff attempted life-saving measures, and EMS was called," the news release said.

Alvin L. Saunders was pronounced dead shortly after EMS crews arrived, officials said.

Saunders was arrested on March 2 on various charges, including felony assault on an individual with disabilities, according to Wake County Sheriff's Office records.

An arrest warrant in the case indicated a man in a wheelchair was attacked.

Saunders was also charged with assault
