DURHAM — Winston-Salem State's faint hopes of reaching the CIAA championship game evaporated on Saturday at the hands of a young Shaw team.

In front of around 800 people at chilly Durham County Stadium, the Bears rallied to beat the Rams, 20-13, scoring 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

Doing the damage for the Bears was freshman quarterback Alexander Marsh, a graduate of Southeast Guilford who played the game of his life. He had no offers coming out of high school, but in January took the offer that the Shaw coaches presented.

“He was very efficient in running their offense,” Rams Coach Robert Massey said. “He did a good job of pulling the ball and running, but what we couldn’t do was let them hang around and they did and they made plays.”

The game was tied with six minutes
