Oklahoma football ’s first loss of the 2025 season was a particularly painful one.

It wasn’t because of the Sooners ’ College Football Playoff hopes — those are still firmly intact — but because of who it came against.

With quarterback John Mateer not quite his usual self in his first game back after September hand surgery, the No. 6 Sooners were held to 258 total yards in a 23-6 loss to archrival Texas on Saturday, Oct. 11 in the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
