LANSING, Mich. (WILX) — Children in Lansing had the opportunity to select free Halloween costumes Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, ensuring that financial barriers won’t prevent them from celebrating the holiday.

The church organized the event to help kids who can’t afford Halloween costumes participate in the Halloween season. More than 600 costumes were available for the giveaway.

Neia Handy, who organized the event, said her inspiration came from a childhood experience that sparked a lasting commitment to helping others.

“When I was really little, my parents heard about this guy that was homeless, and he was trying to have people buy milk and cereal, and I really wanted to buy a gallon of milk for him with my own money, so I did,” Handy said. “And then that started our friendship
