Four people are in the hospital tonight after an apartment fire broke out in Groton this evening.

Residents of an apartment building on Broad Street Extension were trapped on their balconies waiting for help.

"I was laying down and I smelled smoke coming in and I look over, and I see smoke coming all over I'm like ‘oh my God’, and that's when we get up and everyone's yelling, ‘you all need to get out, get out’," resident Samantha Harrington said.

Firefighters got the 911 call around 5 p.m. The Groton fire chief says the fire seemed to come from a third-floor or fourth-floor apartment.

Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof to ventilate so crews could get inside and put out the flames.
