Five people were hospitalized after a helicopter crashed in Huntington Beach, California on Oct. 11, officials said.

Huntington Beach officials said the crash, which was documented in multiple videos circulating on social media, occurred Saturday afternoon at a beach parking lot in the bustling coastal town, roughly 40 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

Videos posted to social media showed the helicopter flying at a low altitude before it suddenly ascended and rotated multiple times. The aircraft can then be seen dropping into a group of palm trees.

The scene is surrounded by restaurants, hotels and public beach access.

The helicopter was involved with a "Cars 'N Copters" event that was scheduled for Oct. 12, the city said on Facebook. The event was set to host an array of helicopters and exotic cars to benefit the Huntington Beach Police and Community Foundation. USA TODAY has reached out to organizers for more information.

Further information about the status of the five people injured in the crash was not immediately available. Huntington Beach officials said the crash is under investigation.

USA TODAY has reached out to city officials, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board for more details.
