KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Kansas City police officer is recovering after being seriously injured in a crash overnight.
The incident was reported just after midnight Saturday on northbound I-29 and NW Waukomis Drive.
According to the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD), the officer was sitting in his car helping a DUI officer on a traffic stop.
KCPD said the officer's car was parked on the shoulder of the northbound I-29 bridge with its red and blue emergency lights on.
The driver of a blue Kia Forte was speeding northbound on I-29 and struck the rear end of the parked patrol car, according to KCPD.
KCPD said the officer and the driver of the Kia were both taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The officer has since been released from the hospital and is continuing to recover.
