BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - If you are receiving threatening text messages claiming you owe money to the state of Mississippi, think twice before you act.

The Mississippi Department of Revenue (MDOR) is experiencing a surge in calls with reports of messages demanding payment for outstanding toll charges, fines owed, and unpaid traffic violations.

This is prompting the department to warn everyone not to click or respond to the messages. They are even asking those receiving the messages to delete what has been sent to them.

“These phishing texts are often threatening, claiming to be from the Department of Revenue or Department of Motor Vehicles, and may include a warning regarding unpaid traffic violations, outstanding toll charges, or fines owed,” A spokesperson with the department said. “The
