Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio (WOIO) - It’s a homecoming nearly 80 years in the making. After nearly 8 decades, Platoon Sergeant Harold Weaver, a Cuyahoga Falls native, and World War 2 Marine finally received his proper tribute.
On May 4th, 1945 Weaver lost his life during a Japanese counterattack in Okinawa. In 2016, the Japanese government returned remains to the US, but Weaver was not identified until 2023.
He was laid to rest at Oakwood Cemetery by crowds, family, some he never got the chance to meet like his great, great nephew Aydan Berger, who is also now a Marine.
“I am overwhelmed just being here” said Berger. “This brings everybody together to mourn a man that made the ultimate sacrifice”
Weaver’s remains were identified by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency with the help of DNA
