ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
Albuquerque residents gathered for a vigil to honor Jayvon Givan, a 29-year-old found dead last September, whose family was not notified of his death until a year later, raising concerns about police procedures.
"It took over here for APD to contact the family, and that's crazy to me because I found multiple members of Javon's family within 15 minutes of opening Facebook," said Jonathan Juarez, an organizer with the Southwest Solidarity Network.
The delay in notification has led many to question why the family was not informed until a year later. Juarez questioned the police's approach, asking, "If APD couldn't find a next of kin, why wouldn't they reach out to the public or the media to try and identify this young man?"
