AUBURN, Ala. — Before Georgia football coach Kirby Smart was joined on his usual pregame walk around Jordan-Hare Stadium with son Andrew, father took son to a different field that had a lot of meaning to him on this day.

In the morning before Smart’s Bulldogs beat Auburn 20-10 on Saturday night Oct. 11, they went to Smart-Collier Field.

The Smart on the field is named after Sonny Smart, Kirby’s father, who passed away in January after complications from hip surgery at age 76.

“This one was special for me,” Smart said.

He explained that he took Andrew, a travel baseball player, to Holtville, Ala., known as Slapout.

It’s about 22 miles north of Montgomery where Kirby Smart was born and where the Bulldogs team hotel was for this trip.
