At 4:06 a.m. on Sunday, the National Weather Service released a coastal flood warning valid from noon until Monday 7 p.m. for Suffolk and Nassau counties.
"Major coastal flooding likely, 2 1/2 to 3 feet of inundation above ground level expected in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline for this afternoon, tonight and Monday afternoon high tide cycles. Locally up to 3 1/2 ft of inundation possible. This poses an elevated threat to life and property," says the weather service. "Water may not fully recede for the most vulnerable waterfront streets and properties in southwest Suffolk county between successive high tides this afternoon into Monday afternoon, which could limit access to these areas for much of this 24 hr period."
