GRUNDY, Va. — Federal, state and local officials gathered in Buchanan County on Friday to celebrate the opening of a nearly three-mile segment of the Coalfields Expressway.

Virginia Secretary of Transportation W. Sheppard Miller III, U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith, R-9th, state Sen. Todd Pillion, R-Abingdon and Del. Will Morefield, R-Tazewell, joined officials from the Virginia Department of Transportation, members of the Coalfields Expressway Authority and Bizzack Construction, LLC, to cut the ribbon for Poplar Creek Phase A.

The road segment comprises 2.74 miles of Corridor Q (known as Route 460/121, or Coalfields Expressway) located between the Southern Gap redevelopment site and Route 604 (Poplar Creek Road), according to a written statement.
