The Red Top was established in 1960 by brothers Gus and John Scouras. Current owner Stavros Athanasiadis bought the drive-in in 2019. Before taking over, he reassured the founding family that he wasn’t going to change a thing — and he hasn’t.

Gus and John, who immigrated from Greece as teens, were operating Winnipeg’s first Junior’s location on Main Street — now VJ’s Drive Inn — when they were approached about converting a former lumber yard on St. Mary’s Road into a restaurant. The plan was to cash in on the drive-in craze sweeping North America at the time. They said yes to the idea, and the rest is history.
