SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Springfield Thunderbirds faced off against the Charlotte Checkers at the MassMutual Center on Saturday night, marking the opening of their tenth season at the ThunderDome.

Despite a sold-out arena, the Thunderbirds were unable to secure a victory, falling to the Checkers in their home opener. This marks the continuation of their streak, having sold out every home opener since 2016.

The Thunderbirds were eliminated in the first round of the Calder Cup playoffs last season, but fans remain optimistic about their chances this year.

"We're going to take it all the way this year," said Donna Korash-Schiff, hopeful for a successful playoff run.
