We’ve all heard the complaints. ‘My property taxes are too high.’ ‘The streets are full of potholes, and the city isn’t fixing them.’ ‘There aren’t enough jobs in Sioux City that pay a decent wage.’ ‘Why don’t we have more fun things to do here.’
Elections are one of the best ways for citizens to make their voices heard on the above issues and many others. But, given a chance to select City Council candidates that most aligned with their own viewpoints, most Sioux City voters collectively yawned this week.
In Tuesday’s primary election, just 9.67% of the 45,387 registered voters bothered to cast a ballot. It’s disheartening that less than 1 in 10 voters skipped an election with nine candidates on the ballot, the most for a council primary in over 20 years.
