America’s ambassador to Israel has branded Bridget Phillipson “delusional” after she claimed the UK had played “a key role” in Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan.

The education secretary claimed the government had worked “behind the scenes” to help end the two-year conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas.

Asked on Sky News what this contribution involved, she said: “These are complex matters of diplomacy that we are involved in but we do welcome and recognise the critical role that the American government played in getting us to this point.”

But Mike Huckabee, who was appointed his country’s ambassador to Israel by President Trump earlier this year, rejected Phillipson’s claims.
